Los Angeles - Action movie director John Woo has signed on to direct and produce a movie based on a new video game property created by veteran developer Warren Spector ("Deus Ex," "Thief: Deadly Shadows"), according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Fox Atomic will release the film version of "Ninja Gold," while no publisher or release date has been set for the game.

"I know that my thought from the start was to develop something that would work just as well in games as in movies, and I know John was thinking along the same lines," Spector, who will also serve as the film's executive producer, told THR.

"This was an attempt to create a concept that would work in, and be developed for, a variety of media simultaneously. That's something new for games -- and for movies."

Woo launched his own game studio, Tiger Hill Games, in 2003, and Midway Games will publish its first title, "John Woo's Stranglehold," in August.
