Los Angeles - Game publisher NCsoft and developer Cryptic Studios have sold the motion picture and television rights for their "City of Heroes" massively multiplayer online superhero game to producer Tom DeSanto, who recently also produced "Transformers," Variety reports.

Launched in 2004, as of May the game claimed around 143,000 subscribers in the U.S. and Europe.

DeSanto plans to produce a live-action movie based on the game, in which players can create their own superheroes and do battle in a virtual world, and also produce a version for television.

"You also haven't seen a big superheroes vs. aliens movie," DeSanto told Variety. "I see this as the next big superhero franchise."
