XM/Sirius Study by Former FCC Chief Economist Supports Merger

Authored by Mark Hefflinger on June 15, 2007 - 1:31pm.

New York - Sirius Satellite Radio this week published a new study on its website commissioned from former FCC chief economist Thomas Hazlett, "The Economics of the Satellite Radio Merger," that argues in favor of the company's proposed merger with rival XM. "After a thorough analysis, it is my opinion that the merger of XM and Sirius will predictably enhance consumer welfare," said Hazlett. "The National Association of Broadcasters' (NAB) staunch opposition to the merger illustrates their similar expectation. The improved economic vitality of a combined satellite radio company would drive industry innovation, promote competition and enhance programming and pricing options for customers."
