Sunnyvale, Calif. - Yahoo announced on Thursday that it will acquire online college and high school sports site Rivals.com. While the companies did not disclose financial terms of the deal, PaidContent.org reports that Yahoo paid about $100 million.

Founded in 2001, Tennessee-based Rivals.com offers editorial content, college message boards and extensive recruitment news on a network of more than 150 websites, which attract a combined 2 million unique visitors per month.

Yahoo said the deal will significantly expand its community offerings and open publishing capabilities of Yahoo Sports, as well as bring new revenue opportunities to the company's advertising and subscription businesses.

"College sports engagement is primarily driven by community, and adding Rivals.com to Yahoo Sports creates tremendous opportunities for us to connect our sports fans with the right sports content at the right time," said James Pitaro, vice president and general manager of Yahoo Sports.
