San Francisco - Publisher CMP Game Group's Game Developer Research division this week released a new census that found there are nearly 600 companies developing and publishing video games in the U.S. and Canada, and more than 39,700 people employed in the development or publishing of games in the U.S.

More than 46% of these are based in California (around 18,300 employees), with Washington (11.63%) and Texas (7.37%) rounding out the top three states.

New York, Massachusetts, Illinois and Florida also count more than 1,000 game professionals.

The study, which included makers of casual, online and mobile, in addition to PC, handheld and console games, also found that there are more than 8,100 game professionals currently employed in Canada.
