Lala.com Disables iTunes Library Streaming Feature

Authored by Mark Hefflinger on July 6, 2007 - 1:52pm.

Los Angeles - Lala.com, an online marketplace that lets users swap CDs and recently launched a feature allowing users to stream their complete iTunes libraries from an online locker, has taken the new streaming feature offline indefinitely, Ars Technica reported.

The company blamed the takedown on bandwidth issues.

"Many of our unique, forward-looking features have generated significant consumer excitement but have also generated an overwhelming load on our systems," Lala spokesman John Kuch told Ars Technica.

"To avoid falling short of consumer expectations, we're holding off on upgrading and returning some aspects of our offering until we can provide a fuller catalog that meets the demand of consumers and includes music from a broader cross section of the industry."

Lala signed a deal with Warner Music to offer the streaming feature, but deals with other labels are still in the works.

The company previously estimated that the feature might cost it $140 million in fees over a two-year period.
