A First Look at YouTube's New In-Video Ads

Authored by Jay Baage on July 10, 2007 - 6:34am.
YouTube has initiated testing of a new kind of in-video advertising. The video that I embedded in this article was uploaded by a Youtube user who spotted it and actually thought it was kind of "cool", which is a good first review, I guess. And it does indeed seem un-intrusive and user-friendly. As Stefan Kolle notes, it seems to avoid the problem that many pre-roll ads have - if you watch a couple of videos in a row, you get the same ad over and over again, which can get pretty annoying.

So, is this what ultimately will replace the 30-second spots and pre-rolls?

um.. cool?

not sure what's so _cool_ about intrusive advertising... but i guess we all have to make trade-offs, and gooTube has got to make its nut. COOL is not a word i'd use (repeatedly) to describe this, though. pain in the ass, maybe. transparently greedy. bothersome, maybe? annoying?

transparently greedy?

transparently greedy? are you kidding me? oh yeah, they're totally greedy for letting you throw any video you want online. it's not like bandwidth, servers and storage dont cost money. tool.

ripetv has been doing this

ripetv has been doing this since 2003. www.ripetv.com

Not to mention Octane TV has

Not to mention Octane TV has also been doing it since 2005 in the motorsport genre. Their advertising I find to be none intrusive because it's pretty seamless and all endemic companies.
