Santa Monica, Calif. - In an advertising first, Sprint will sponsor a major label song distributed on file-sharing networks.

The company is teaming with Warner Music Group's Atlantic Records and ArtistDirect to seed 16 million songs from hip-hop artist Plies emblazoned with the Sprint logo on various peer-to-peer services.

The New York Post reports that Sprint paid a "substantial six-figure" fee for the campaign, which will be split between the artist, label and ArtistDirect, whose Media Defender service will be used to distribute the tracks.
