Brussels - The European Commission has announced its support for the DVB-H mobile TV broadcasting standard led by Finland-based Nokia, over competing standards developed by Qualcomm and Korean firms.

The EU also contributed financial backing to the tune of $55 million towards the development of DVB-H.

The Commission said that  DVB-H, already the most widely deployed mobile TV technology across Europe, "appears to be the strongest contender for future mobile TV deployment in Europe."

The Commission added that it will "continue to monitor the situation in the EU and may come forward with proposals in 2008 including, if appropriate, making this open standard mandatory."
