Stamford, Conn. - Worldwide PC shipments rose 12% in the second quarter, compared with the prior year, according to a report released on Thursday by IT research firm Gartner.

The firm credited the results, which were more than 1% better than its previous forecast, to strong consumer PC growth and demand for mobile PCs.

"The PC market experienced a boost from better than expected sales in the United States, Asia/Pacific and Latin America," said Mikako Kitagawa, the principal analyst for Gartner's Client Computing Markets group.

"The U.S. deskbased PC market beat our expectations, due in part to higher than expected sales in the professional market."

Hewlett-Packard remained the No. 1 vendor, accounting for 18.2% of worldwide PC shipments.

HP grew faster than the worldwide market average growth rate for the ninth quarter in a row, while rival Dell (15%) continued to struggle.
