Greenville, S.C. - Zipit Wireless, a developer of wireless instant messaging devices, has raised $4.7 million in its first round of venture capital, from Windspeed Ventures, SunBridge Partners and Meritus Ventures.

In addition, Zipit announced that it has received $200,000 in start-up capital from SC Launch, a SCRA collaboration that assists entrepreneurial start-up companies.

In 2004, South Carolina-based Zipit launched its Wireless Messenger, a portable IM device that connects to Wi-Fi wireless home networks or free "hotspots." The device supports all major IM services.

"It eliminates family feuds caused by teens tying up the family computer to use popular instant messaging services, while incurring no monthly or per message fees," according to Zipit.
