New York - News Corp.'s MySpace online social network said it has deleted the profiles of 29,000 convicted sex offenders from its service -- significantly more than the 7,000 the company said it first identified in May, Reuters reported.

"We're pleased that we've successfully identified and removed registered sex offenders from our site and hope that other social networking sites follow our lead," said MySpace Chief Security Officer Hemanshu Nigam.

The company last year partnered with Sentinel Tech Holding to build a national database of sex offenders, which it has been cross-referencing against members of its social network.

MySpace currently counts about 60 million unique visitors from the U.S. to its site each month; there are a total of about 600,000 registered sex offenders in the U.S.
