Reston, Va. - Sprint Nextel said on Thursday that it is working with Google to create a new WiMAX mobile Internet portal. The companies said that the site will feature search, interactive communications and social networking tools.
The news comes a week after Sprint Nextel announced plans to partner with rival Clearwire to jointly construct a national WiMAX network, offering consumers wireless Internet access at speeds comparable to wireline broadband services.
Now, the company said that the new portal will "help spur new mobility and location-assisted services," while establishing an "Internet destination" for user-generated content and multimedia offerings.
Sprint Nextel is planning to test the WiMAX network in D.C., Baltimore and Chicago by the end of this year, with the service launching in other parts of the country next spring.
