Virgin Mobile to Shutter U.K. Mobile TV Service

London - Less than 10 months after the service's launch, Virgin Mobile announced this week that it will shutter its U.K. mobile TV service in early 2008, TheRegister reported.

The closure comes as a result of bandwidth provider BT Movio's cancellation of its contract with GCap Media, which owns the frequency on which the mobile TV service operated.

Virgin Mobile had only sold around 10,000 of the only handset to support the service, the Lobster 700TV, according to TheRegister.

The service was also based on the DMB (Digital Multimedia Broadcast) standard, and not the Nokia-backed DVB-H standard recently endorsed by the European Union.
