Silver Spring, Md. - Discovery Communications, the media company behind such cable TV channels as The Discovery Channel, TLC and Animal Planet, said that it has acquired New York-based eco-lifestyle web site TreeHugger.com.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The site will become part of Discovery's multi-platform Planet Green initiative, which will launch the first eco-lifestyle TV network in 50 million homes early next year.

Founded in 2004, TreeHugger features a mix of news, blogs and advice related to the environment, sustainable development, conservation and organic living.

The site draws about 1.4 million unique monthly visitors.
