Phoenix, Ariz. - Apollo Group, an online education firm whose holdings include the University of Phoenix, announced on Wednesday that it will acquire online ad network Aptimus, in a deal valued at $48 million.

Phoenix, Ariz.-based Apollo Group said it will switch to internal marketing through San Francisco-based Aptimus once its deal with AOL and its Advertising.com unit expires in the next several months.

"Integrating Aptimus' technology and very experienced team into our current marketing initiatives and service center model will take us to the next level in managing student inquiries and achieving further process and cost efficiencies in new-student enrollments," said Apollo Group president Brian Mueller.
