San Francisco - Kongregate, a community site for online games, announced on Thursday that it has raised over $5 million in a new round of financing, led by Greylock Partners.

San Francisco-based Kongregate was founded in 2006, and launched its site in March.

The site currently hosts 1,500 online games from 750 independent and small studio developers, and attracts over 800,000 unique visitors per month.

Users can interact both with one another and the game developers themselves, providing comments, ratings and tags on their game titles.

Kongregate also announced the launch of a premium development program, where the company will fund a host of independent game developers to create original, large-scale Flash games exclusive to the site.

The company, which said it shares up to 50% of ad revenue with developers, expect to launch six of these projects by year's end.
