Universal Music Debuts Series of DJ MixtapesAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on August 20, 2007 - 3:43pm.
New York - In the wake of the RIAA's campaign against DJ mixtapes -- bootleg recordings that feature a DJ's compilation of copyrighted tracks edited together and often help break new artists -- Universal Music Enterprises has released its own series of mixtapes, Billboard reported. In January, federal agents working with the RIAA arrested "Gangsta Grillz" mixtapes creator DJ Drama and hip-hop producer Don Cannon on racketeering charges, which had a chilling effect on the format. Universal's "Lethal Squad Mixtapes" sell for around $5 each and will feature licensed tracks mixed by a number of DJs. "How ironic," DJ Drama commented to Billboard. "I guess they've realized just how important mixtapes are."
