Frankfurt, Germany - Sony on Thursday announced plans to introduce a TV tuner and digital video recorder accessory, called PlayTV, for its PlayStation 3 video game console, the Associated Press reported.

The device would allow users to record and store high-definition TV shows on the PlayStation 3's hard drive, and also enable wireless transfer of recorded shows for viewing on Sony's PSP handheld game device.

The PlayTV device will utilize the European DVB-T standard, and is initially slated for release in the U.K., France, Germany, Italy and Spain in early 2008.

Sony did not say how much the PlayTV will cost, or when it might also be released in the U.S.
