New Jersey Teen Cracks iPhone for Use on Competing Networks

New York - A New Jersey teen has discovered a method of unlocking Apple's iPhone so that it will work with carriers other than AT&T, including overseas networks, the Associated Press reported on Friday.

Apple and AT&T require that consumers sign on to a two-year AT&T service contract when they purchase the device.

Seventeen-year-old George Hotz confirmed to AP that he is now using his iPhone on the T-Mobile network, and posted the hack -- which was created in collaboration with four others, and requires a soldering iron and advanced software knowledge -- on his iPhonejtag blog on Thursday.

Hotz was weary that some might use his exploit to purchase iPhones, unlock them and sell them overseas, where the device isn't slated to go on sale until September.

"That's exactly, like, what I don't want," Hotz told AP. "I don't want people making money off this."
