Coming soon – the ZunePhone?

The first unofficial photos of the Microsoft Zune 2 and Zune Flash music players have just emerged - they reveal an 80GB version and a 4 and 8GB flash model with what looks like a much more appealing design than the previous model (if it is the real thing). But the question remains – with Apple’s iPhone and Nokia’s new models, when will we see a ZunePhone?

So far, the only exclusive sneak peeks that have emerged from the soon-to-be released ZunePhone have been made by independent producers. I especially like there two: In 2006 they welcomed you to the social. In 2007 be prepared to accept a social call.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmar famously laughed off the iPhone’s potential - the most expensive phone ever.

However, he has avoided the issue of the total flop of the Zune music player so far – just simply stating that Zune can be very competitive in this space. But how? With the pictures that emerged on the blog Gizmodo we get an idea of what is to come.

However, somewhat concerning is that one of Ballmer’s main issues with the iPhone is that he claims that it does not appeal to business customers.

That is exactly the same argument the former Ericsson CEO Lars Ramqvist used when he dismissed Nokia’s colorful and playful phones back in the late 1990’s.

The strategy to focus on “business phones” (design and media capability doesn’t matter) led to that Ericsson almost had to fold their handset unit, before joining forces with Sony to form SonyEricsson.

So, it will be very interesting to see what the ZunePhone will look like, if Microsoft really decides to make one.
