Universal Music Files Copyright Suit Against Video-Sharing Site Veoh

Los Angeles - Major record label Universal Music Group has filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against video-sharing site Veoh Networks, Bloomberg reported.

"Veoh follows in the ignominious footsteps of other recent mass infringers such as Napster,'' Universal said in its complaint, filed today in the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles.

"Veoh's rampant infringement will not stop until Veoh, and those who own, control, and run it, are enjoined and held financially responsible.''

Last month, Veoh -- whose backers include former Disney head Michael Eisner's Tornante investment firm -- filed a pre-emptive lawsuit asking a judge to declare that it does not infringe copyrights, and, under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, is not responsible for what its users post to the site.

Veoh also faces another pending copyright lawsuit, filed last year by adult entertainment provider IO Group, which claims the company offered its videos on the service.

A hearing in that case is scheduled for Friday in U.S. District Court in San Jose, Calif.
