Analysis: Is Britney Spears’ Career Over After the MTV Disaster?Authored by Jay Baage on September 9, 2007 - 11:41pm.
Britney Spears’ long-time fans were looking forward to her come-back performance at MTV’s Video Music Awards yesterday. Many music biz executives from her label Jive were probably also watching to see if she “still has it.” In short, I’m sorry to say, the answers seems to be no. If you don’t believe me, take a look at her performance here.News travels fast on the Internet, even though I’m currently in Europe, I woke up to disappointed comments from fans on our site as well as an open letter to Britney from celebrity blogger Perez Hilton who writes: “We are insulted, offended and disgusted by your “performance” at the VMAs. Are you f…ing serious??? What you did was disrespectful to your few remaining fans. And it was disrespectful to MTV! You didn’t even try!!!!!” The BBC's David Willis said her performance would "go down in the history books as being one of the worst to grace the MTV Awards." I was expecting her comeback this fall when she split up with her wanna-be rapper husband Kevin Federline. But, as my fellow DMW writer Scott Goldberg has pointed out, instead she began the breakdown of the decade - complete with “crotchal exposure, head-shaving and umbrella-wielding madness” that unavoidably ended up in rehab. However, a few months delayed, it seems like my prediction is coming true when her first single “Gimme more” was leaked last week after playing on Z100 in New York. Her peps have now confirmed that an album due in stores Nov. 13 (will it be pushed back now?). However, just like her ex-husband's first nationally televised performance on Fox during the “Teen Choice Awards” around this time last year, Britney sucked. The 25-year-old did not just draw ridicule to herself by dressing up as a stripper, dancing badly and miming her new single, her performance opened a new era for MTV’s flagship show, which have suffered poor reviews and a decline in ratings over the last few years. ![]() This year, MTV had moved the show from New York City to Las Vegas' Palms Casino, shortened the show from three hours to two, and changed the show's setup to focus more on performances than awards. Britney’s comeback was supposed to be the big draw and it was, but for all the wrong reasons. MTV has promised viewers more show performances and clips via its Web site and other "remixed" versions of the show. However, I think that if there is one clip that people will watch, it is Britney’s lack-luster performance on YouTube. And it is not exactly the vitamin shot MTV and the troubled music biz was hoping for. Instead, seeing Britney walk through her dance moves with little enthusiasm and lip-synching badly, I could only think about how bad a decision it was of MTV to put her as the opening act and moving the VMAs to Las Vegas, the trash-culture capital of the world. What the music biz needs now is authenticity, creativity and originality, not re-cycled train-wrecks like Britney (which is sad really, I was hoping that she would get it together). Her opening the VMAs served as a smack-in-the-face to real musicians. Joakim Baage Flickr Images By justyn1226 and sams_eddie |
