London - Wireless carrier Vodafone Group has announced plans to offer an unlimited mobile music download service in the U.K., powered by Britain-based Omnifone.
The MusicStation service will launch with a catalog of over 1 million tracks, and cost subscribers with 2.5G and 3G phones about $4 per week.
Vodafone's move is seen as offsetting offerings from rival Nokia, which recently introduced its own mobile music service, and Apple, which is set to launch its iPhone in the U.K. by the end of the year.
"I am sure the iPhone will have appeal but we think what we are offering here with MusicStation is a very good, customer-centric, all-you-can-eat offer," Vodafone chief marketing officer Tim Yates told Reuters.
