The White Stripes announced the cancellation of their upcoming US tourOne of the most anticipated tours in years has been cancelled, as The White Stripes have announced that drummer Meg White “is suffering from acute anxiety and is unable to travel at this time," a posting on their Web site said. "We hate to let people down and are very sorry."  The tour was scheduled to begin in Albuquerque tomorrow night and finish in Honolulu on October 10, at which time the band would move on to Britain to begin the European leg.

The cancellation also includes the anticipated appearance at this weekend’s Austin City Limits in Austin, Texas.  Muse has been scheduled to fill in.

A spokesperson for the band did not rule out the band’s European tour, however, which is scheduled to begin October 24th.

The Whites Stripes’ new album, Icky Thump, debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200, and has reportedly sold nearly 1 million copies.

The duo played a memorable show earlier in the summer at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival and appeared at the top of their game (a clip of Meg White singing "In the Cold Cold Night" at that show can be seen here).

One of the interesting aspects to the US tour, and something the band had expressed particular excitement about, was the atypical choices for gigs in places like Alaska and North Dakota.

Also of note, the band Cold War Kids, a popular emerging act from Fullerton, CA, was scheduled to open many of the shows.

Ticket refunds for the tour can be made at the point of purchase.
