Kanye West Bashes MTV Again, this time on Ellen

Authored by Scott Goldberg on September 14, 2007 - 11:16am.
Kanye West is still mad at MTVThe man is angry right now.  Really, really angry.  And forget about the album he released on Tuesday, which sold around 430,000 copies its first, well ahead of 50 Cent who also released an album that day.  West is feeling really sensitive right now, and MTV is the culprit.  "[MTV] didn't give me the opportunity to rock the way I wanted to rock," he said on Ellen DeGeneres’s show Ellen.  He said his five VMA nominations without any trophies to show for it was a "slap in the face."  Kanye West is not a sore loser.  Believe that.

He also continued to bash MTV about the way he perceived the network’s handling of Britney Spears’ performance.  Earlier in the week he said MTV “exploited” the pop star in “helping her to end her career.”

On Ellen he said, "I just felt like she wasn't ready and I felt like they had to get their ratings. ... It just shows you it's not a black and white thing; it's a money thing.  "I felt bad for her too. I felt bad for everyone involved."

Whether you buy the conspiracy theory or not, West had a point about the preparation that went into the performance: "Someone had to be at that practice and be like, 'Wow. This is not good.' All the lip-syncing and everything.  I mean, that performance, had it been pulled off perfectly, still wouldn't have been up to par to start off the MTV Awards."

Kanye couldn’t stop there, though.  No, he had to take on the entire music industry, belittling everyone who has made music this year.  "I told the guy at MTV, 'There's only a couple things important in music this year: Umbrella, Amy Winehouse.”

Yep, Kanye.  Definitely true.  Smashing Pumpkins and The White Stripes didn’t launch albums this summer or anything.  Rage Against the Machine didn’t reunite at Coachella.  Lily Allen didn’t play a role in the music scene.  Nope, nothing happened.  Umbrella and Amy Winehouse.  Good call.

But you have to hand it to the guy: He knows how to sell an album.  Few are making headlines this week the way West has.  Everyone take notes.

re: Umbrella, Amy Winehouse

He's right about Umbrella. He's not talking about the most important/best songs, he's talking about the biggest songs.
