Kanye West Beats 50 Cent on First Week Album Sales

Kanye West may be shorter than 50 Cent in height, but he's larger in album salesNielsen SoundScan released its weekly report today, and Kanye West sold more albums in the first week of his new release, Graduation, than anyone has in 2.5 years.  He has sold 957,000 copies since the album’s release last Tuesday, the highest total since 50 Cent’s March 2005 The Massacre, which sold 1.1 million copies its first week.  West’s album dominated the battle with 50 Cent, who released a new album, Curtis, on the same day.  His album has only sold 691,000 copies in its first week.

According to SoundScan it is the first time that two different artists each releasing new albums in the same week have topped 600,000 copies sold.  Guns N’ Roses released two albums on the same day in 1991, Use Your Illusion 1 & 2, and each sold more than 600,000.

West’s album also set a record in digital sales, topping Maroon 5’s 102,000 downloads set this year.  West has sold 132,000 downloads so far, and his single Stronger has been the #1 selling track on iTunes for seven straight weeks.

West has been making headlines over the last week by publicly denouncing MTV and declaring he will never work with the network again.  He reiterated that stance on Ellen

A backstage tirade made it to the internet (see it here), where he complained about his five Video Music Award nominations without any wins.  Overall it was a brilliant week of marketing and publicity for the rap star, one which likely benefited his album sales.  50 Cent, on the other hand, was largely quiet, limiting his public statements to his performances.

50 kicks ass

it was a fluke for kanye, fif will come back kicking kanye's ass!!!! YEA 50

The disclaimer at the end

The disclaimer at the end stating 50 had limited public appearances while Kanye was all over is completely false. Not only was 50 Cent on almost all of the same television programs as Kanye, but 50 was also doing a lot of shows and sporatic appearances that didn't make television. Not to mention, Kanye marketing and promotion budget was half that of 50s. Goin stictly by who spent more on promotions, 50 should have won hands down. But the fact of the matter is that Kanye has a better cd - everyone has heard most of the tracks from "Curtis" playing almost constantly on the radio, who needs the cd? Goes to show that although Kanye's press has been rather bad the last, all press is good press. But when it comes to ringtone sales, I'm sure "Get Money" has long outsold everything except maybe "This is Why I'm Hot" .

I just pray 50 cent is a man

I just pray 50 cent is a man of his word and never releases a album again! Kanye is a artist with a huge ego he can back up. 50 is a thug that should have died when he got shot nine times, but God saved his so he could get his ass handed to him by the Greatest Rapper/Producer of today! Sorry 50 fans your boy is done!
