Report: U.S. Ad Spending Down 0.5% This Year; Internet Up 23.6%

New York - U.S. advertising spending across all sectors was down 0.5% in the first half of 2007, compared with the same period a year ago, while Internet spending showed the strongest performance with a 23.6% increase, according to a report from Nielsen Monitor-Plus.

Other sectors that showed gains were national magazines (up 8.4%) and outdoor ads (5.1%).

Network TV ad spending dropped 3.8%, while network radio fell 8.5%; national newspaper ad spending was down 5.9%, while local papers saw an 8% decline.

The Nielsen report also found that ad spending among the top 10 companies fell 7.3% from last year, to $8.3 billion, as seven out of the ten top advertisers -- including Time Warner and AT&T -- decreased their budgets.
