Englewood Cliffs, N.J. - NBC Universal announced on Monday that it has begun a trial with Cox Communications, the nation's third-largest cable TV provider, whereby it will offer several of its primetime shows for free on the company's video-on-demand service.

Episodes of "30 Rock," "Friday Night Lights," "Las Vegas," "Life" and "Bionic Woman" will be available the day after they are broadcast, with the fast-forward feature disabled so viewers may not skip past commercials.

The trial will initially be conducted with Cox subscribers in Orange County and Palos Verdes, Calif.

NBC recently opted not to renew a deal to distribute its shows on Apple's iTunes, following a pricing dispute.

Since then, the company has struck a deal to offer its shows through Amazon.com's Unbox service, and announced plans to offer free downloads of many of its TV shows that will expire after a week.
