RIAA Mails Another 403 Pre-Lawsuit Settlement Letters to CollegesAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on September 24, 2007 - 1:05pm.
Washington - The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has sent a new batch of 403 "pre-litigation settlement letters" to students and others at 22 U.S. universities, offering them "discounted" settlements of potential copyright infringement charges related to file-sharing before it officially files suit. The RIAA also said it filed 24 copyright lawsuits against previous letter recipients who did not respond to them. In addition, the RIAA launched a series of full-page ads -- created by college students --in college papers across the country, which "encourage fans to enjoy online music legally and remind students of the legal, privacy and security risks associated with illegal downloading."
