Redmond, Wash. - Microsoft has announced that its "Halo 3" video game for the Xbox 360 console racked up $170 million in U.S. sales on Tuesday, more than any movie or album has generated on its first day on sale, making the game's release "the biggest day in entertainment history," the company said.

Microsoft did not provide unit sales details for the $60 game, for which the company hatched a massive ad campaign, and offered simultaneously in 17 languages and 37 countries.

Some 1.7 million U.S. consumers pre-ordered the game online before its release on Sept. 25, which Microsoft said was also a pre-order record.

Microsoft's "Halo 2" held the previous first day sales record, netting $125 million in sales upon its release in 2004.
