New York - CBS on Friday introduced EyeLab, a new digital production studio that will create and distribute short clips from the network's lineup of TV shows, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The video clips, some of which will also be user-generated, will be streamed for free. CBS said it plans to sell embedded ads in the clips.

CBS Interactive president Quincy Smith said the company's research showed that less than one-third of its Web audience wanted to watch full-length shows online.

The move comes as many of the other major networks have begun offering premiere episodes of their new series online for free, marketing them in advance of their broadcast debuts.

"It turns our promotion into content," George Schweitzer, president of CBS Marketing, told The Journal.

"The clips about 'CSI' or something from how a director shoots a scene in the show 'NUMB3RS,' these are all things that link back to our shows."
