McLean, Va. - Gannett, the publisher of 85 U.S. newspapers including USA Today, announced on Wednesday that it has acquired a controlling interest in Schedule Star, which operates HighSchoolSports.net.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Founded in 1964, Schedule Star publishes athletic scheduling books and offers an online scheduling application used by more than half the country's athletic directors.

The company's HighSchoolSports.net includes a network of thousands of high school sports sites, which will share content with Gannett's local newspapers, TV stations and websites.

The acquisition comes shortly after the launches of Web-based high school sports coverage from fellow big media firms Hearst-Argyle Television (HighSchoolPlaybook.com) and Belo (HSGameTime.com).
