New York - U.S. television viewing over the past year has remained at the record levels set in the prior year, while the number of homes with digital video recorders has more than doubled, according to a report from The Nielsen Company.

Between September 2006 and September 2007, the total average time a household had a TV set on was 8 hours and 14 minutes per day -- the same amount recorded during 2005-2006.

Likewise, the average amount of TV watched by individual viewers was flat, dipping just one minute to 4 hours and 34 minutes per day.

"Television clearly remains a very important part of daily life in the United States," said Nielsen Media Research's Patricia McDonough.

"There are numerous screens competing for time and attention as well as consumer devices providing new ways for viewers to watch their favorite shows. Regardless, these trends demonstrate that tuning to traditional television remains strong."

The survey also found that the number of households with digital video recorders is now estimated at 20.5%, compared with 8% in January 2006.
