San Francisco - Strong sales of "Halo 3," and the Xbox 360 console from Microsoft for which the game was developed, propelled U.S. video game sales up 75% in September, to $1.36 billion, Reuters reported, citing data from market research firm NPD.
The third installment of Bungie Studios' "Halo" franchise sold 3.3 million copies last month, dwarfing sales of all other titles.
Microsoft also sold nearly 528,000 Xbox 360 units, taking the top spot for the first time this year from the Nintendo Wii, which sold 501,000 units.
Sony sold 119,000 of its PlayStation 3 in September; in an effort to boost sales, the company knocked the console's price down to $500 this week, and also announced a new version that will sell for $400.
Among other game software, Nintendo's "Wii Play" took second place, selling 282,000 units, and Electronic Arts had three games in the top 10.
