San Francisco - GameLayers, a San Francisco-based game developer focused on "passively-multiplayer" online games, has raised $500,000 in new funding led by O'Reilly AlphaTech Ventures, PEHub.com reported, citing a regulatory filing.

The PMOG concept uses data from Web surfing, such as which sites a user has visited, and how they arrived there, to ascribe points.

The company's PMOG.com game, which utilizes a Firefox plug-in to monitor Web surfing, is currently accepting applications for beta testers.

Other shareholders in GameLayers include Joi Ito, chairman of Creative Commons and CEO of venture capital firm Neoteny, and Richard Wolpert, chief strategy officer at RealNetworks.
