Blu-ray-logoLos Angeles - U.S. sales of Blu-ray Disc titles so far this year have been nearly double those on the rival HD DVD format, Reuters reported, citing sales data from Home Media Research.

Sony Blu-ray title sales from Jan. 1 through Sept. 30 totaled 2.6 million units, compared with 1.4 million units sold on Toshiba's HD DVD format.

A total of 4.98 million titles on both formats combined have been sold since Sony and Toshiba launched them last spring.

Analysts said that HD DVD's recent 18-month exclusivity deals with Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Animation will improve its standing in the fourth quarter.

"This definitely smoothes out the edge that Blu-ray had in exclusive titles, and it very much strengthens HD DVD's hand in the fourth quarter," Tom Adams, president of Adams Media Research, told Reuters.

In related news, Paramount Home Video recently announced that "Transformers" set a high-definition disc first-day sales record, moving over 100,000 units on Oct. 16.
