Audrina Patridge says 'The Hills' is not Scripted

Audrina PatridgeCan you imagine the meetings at MTV that took place over how to handle the news that its reality staple, The Hills, was scripted?  What MTV fails to realize is that most people could care less, real or not.  If the show is entertaining, we’ll watch.

Take our Poll: Is 'Reality Television' Real Anymore?

The network credited for creating the modern reality genre seems nervous about giving up its throne, however.

Audrina Patridge likely got an email from MTV last week saying she needed to boost hope that the show is indeed real.  “Everything is real,” Patridge told People. “Lauren and me are real friends.  We live in our apartment. That’s real, like where we work, everything. The situations are real.”

She then added: “I mean, they might be kinda like, ‘Okay, we want you to go to Les Deux tonight,’ so we go and whatever happens, happens. And they might do things to tweak it a little bit, but our reactions—it’s totally real. It’s reality.”

Isn’t that everyone’s real life?  A producer calls you up and says, “We need you at Les Deux tonight,” then when you get there you’ve already got enemies and cat fights!  Don’t know about you, but if that’s not reality, what is?

The fight to maintain the semblance of reality comes on the heels of comments made last week by Gavin Beasley, who went on a date with LC on the show.  “[MTV] totally set up the BBQ scene for Brody and I to meet each other and talk because, as they said, ‘the audience would get a kick out of seeing ‘the ex’ talking to ‘the new guy,’” Beasley told Best Week Ever’s blog.  “Brody would talk all this s—, then be like, ‘Sorry about that, we’re just trying to make good television. He creates drama and a storyline. That’s why he is there.”

Does anyone ever get the feeling Jim Carey’s 1998 movie The Truman Show is more relevant today than ever?
