Mountain View, Calif. - Google (NSDQ: GOOG) is set to launch OpenSocial, a platform for developing social applications that can run across all social networks and websites.

The release follows the success that Facebook has seen with its application platform, and recent announcement from MySpace and Friendster that they would follow suit, and offer their own developers' platforms.

"The release of OpenSocial marks the first time that multiple social networks have been made accessible under a common API to make development and distribution easier and more efficient for developers," Google said in a statement.

The company said several developers have already built applications using OpenSocial for Orkut, Google's own social network.

Other sites that have signed on to accept OpenSocial applications so far include LinkedIn, Hi5, iLike, Slide, Ning, Viadeo, Oracle, Flixster, Friendster and Plaxo.

CNET News.com reported that a Google representative would not say whether the company had spoken with Facebook or MySpace, or comment on why they aren't yet involved.
