New York - Over 59 million people, or 37.1% of all active U.S. Internet users, visited newspaper websites during the third quarter, an increase of 3.7% from the same period a year ago, according to a report from the Newspaper Association.

Newspaper websites also saw an increase in total page views during the quarter, from 2.5 billion last year to 2.8 billion during the quarter, while the average number of minutes spent on such sites grew by 4%, to 43 minutes per month.

The report follows recent announcements of online ad revenue increases from publishers including Gannett, Tribune and McClatchy.

Another report, from Scarborough Research, found that that newspapers and newspaper websites reach 77% of all adults weekly, including 65% of the 18-24 and 69% of the 25-34 age demographics.
