Washington - Revolution, the DC-based investment firm headed by AOL (NYSE: TW) co-founder Steve Case, said on Thursday that it has formally launched a free online music service called Qloud. The service debuted as a Facebook application less than three months ago, and already has 1 million registered users and 120 million recorded plays.

Qloud's service features an online jukebox with streaming music and videos, featuring embedded content from providers such as YouTube, Revver and Brightcove.

The service also features social networking tools and a community-based music discovery system driven by an iTunes plug-in.

Qloud expects to soon announce integration with other social networks.

The company's investors and board members include Chris Blackwell, the founder of Island Records; Dave Goldberg, the founder of Launch Music; Jim Bankoff, the former head of AOL's online music properties; Ted Leonsis, the vice chairman emeritus of AOL; and music industry executives Paul Vidich (Warner Music) and Tom Ryan (EMI Music).

Qloud also was co-founded by former AOL executives Toby Murdock and Mike Lewis.

"Free, on-demand content…without the DRM hassles associated with downloads is the music experience that consumers want," said Murdock.
