Rochester, N.Y. - The number of U.S. Internet users grew 10% over the past year to reach an estimated 178 million, or 79% of adults, according to the latest Harris Poll.

This figure has steadily grown over the past few years, up from 77% in 2006, 74% in 2005, 64% in 2001 and 57% in 2000; back in 1995, when Harris began to track Internet usage, just 9% of U.S. adults were online.

The average number of hours per week spent online is also up, to 11 hours -- from 9 hours last year and 8 hours in 2005.

Internet access from the home and at work saw mild gains from last year, while the greatest rise was among adults who go online someplace other than at home or work; this demographic increased from 22% in 2006 to 31% today.
