Tokyo - Sony has announced plans to launch a new, lighter version of its PlayStation 2 console with a built-in AC adaptor later this month in Japan, Reuters reported on Tuesday.

The device is set to go on sale Nov. 22 and sell for $140, the same price as the existing model in Japan.

Sony said the new model, without the external adapter, will make it easier for gamers to play anywhere in the home.

The PlayStation 2 last month celebrated the seventh anniversary of its release, at which time Sony said that worldwide sales have surpassed 120 million.

The company has projected sales of 12 million PlayStation 2 units for its fiscal year ending March 2008.
