Santa Clara, Calif. - Macrovision (NASD: MVSN), a provider of copy-protection and content distribution technologies, announced on Wednesday that it has acquired All Media Guide (AMG), a provider of informational databases on music, movies and games.

Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Founded in 1991, Michigan-based AMG's databases contain information on millions of sound files, used by both brick-and-mortar and online retailers, and its media recognition technology and music discovery software are deployed on various consumer electronics devices.

"AMG plays a critical role in enhancing the overall consumers' user experience in searching, discovering, purchasing and enjoying entertainment media," said Macrovision CEO Fred Amoroso.

"Its offerings complement our existing solutions and partnerships for helping content owners monetize their digital media assets and device makers retain and grow their customer base."

Muze too!

Muze too!

What is so frightening for Gracenote and Muze?

Why would Gracenote and Muze be so terrified of Macrovision/AMG?

AMG's "Lasso" product

AMG's "Lasso" product competes directly with Gracenote in the media recognition end of things.

As for Muze, I don't think that this represents much to them. With their shift into the digital media end of the pool, I see them pulling ahead of AMG in the not-too-distant future.

Muze?

I am lost as to why you would think Muze has any chance of pulling ahead of AMG. Muze has been in a quagmire since it lost most of its management recently. It's also lost most of its high end customer base over the last year, specifically to AMG. Muze (and Gracenote) are most likely up for sale at a heavy discount, especially after the Macrovision acquisition announcements. Do you have any information that the rest of the industry is missing?

Oooh... You're the "rest of

Oooh... You're the "rest of the industry"...?!? I had no idea! Most of the management that Muze "lost" over the last 6 months or so were hangers-on from the long-time management team that allowed Muze to fall behind its main competitor. So no loss there, NOW, Muze's recently-appointed CTO is the founder and chief architect from AMG. So I suspect that Muze has finally gotten its ducks in a row, and will be able to make the kind of progress it needs to roll past AMG, even in light of the Macrovision acquisition.
