IBM Applies for Patent on DVD Advertising System

London - IBM (NYSE: IBM) has applied for a U.S. patent on a system that would serve advertising during DVD playback, The Register reports. "Whenever a DVD is to be played, a certificate is consulted to determine whether the content of the DVD should be played with or without commercial interruptions," the patent reads. "If the certificates provide for commercial interruptions, then commercials can be obtained from an online service that renders commercials on demand, or from the DVD itself."

The DVD better be free!

They can put commercials in the DVD if the DVD is free. If I saw a commercial in something I paid for I would take it back and the DVD player. I think the same principle is true for going to the movies. I like seeing trailers they are relevant to the experience of the event. But I hate seeing "Mountain Dew" ads and I even like "Mountain Dew". The drinks should be free or the production should be so different that is seems like a film. Not a TV commercial scaled up for the big screen. It's lame and ignored.
