Clinton Backer Sneaks Tough Question at CNN/YouTube Debate

Authored by Scott Goldberg on November 29, 2007 - 7:04am.

CNN and YouTube hosted a Republican debate yesterday, and Hillary Clinton’s campaign has emerged as the hot topic.  It happened when retired Brig. Gen. Keith Kerr, whose affiliation to Clinton was unknown, stood and asked the candidates, “why you think that American men and women in uniform are not professional enough to serve with gays and lesbians,” Politico reports.  According to a press release from the Clinton campaign, Kerr was named co-chairman of the New York senator’s National Military Veterans group this month.

CNN claims ignorance in the matter.  Anchorman Anderson Cooper, who moderated the debate, said it was the network’s responsibility to accurately identify Kerr (watch his post-debate remarks here).

And David Bohrman, SVP for CNN and an executive producer of the debate, said, "We regret this and apologize to the Republican candidates. We never would have used the general's question had we known that he was connected to any presidential candidate."

But the dirty game of pool that is American politics appears to be the main culprit, as Politico says Kerr told CNN he had done no work for Clinton, and the network discovered no donation ties to the campaign.  Kerr also apparently told CNN he is a member of the Log Cabin Republicans.
