HBO Takes on The Barry Bonds Story

Authored by Scott Goldberg on November 29, 2007 - 7:43am.

Barry Bonds, the San Francisco Giants slugger and current Major League Baseball homerun king, was recently indicted on federal charges for perjury, obstruction of justice, and lying under oath, capping a story that dates back to his single-season homerun record obliteration.  One of the most controversial figures in the history of American sports will now take center stage in an HBO film, Variety reports.

Ron Shelton, who has a long and successful resume of sports films, will direct the project.  He directed Bull Durham, Cobb, Tin Cup, and White Men Can’t Jump.

Shelton will also co-write the script with fellow Tin Cup co-writer John Norville, who will begin the project after the WGA strike ends, Variety says.

According to the article, HBO Films has acquired the rights to the book "Game of Shadows: Barry Bonds, BALCO and the Steroids Scandal That Rocked Professional Sports,” written by Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams.
