Tokyo - Sony's PlayStation 3 outsold rival Nintnedo's Wii console in Japan for the first time this month, Reuters reported, citing sales data compiled by Japan's Enterbrain.

In the four weeks ended Nov. 25, the PS3 sold 183,217 units in Japan compared to 159,193 units for the Wii.

In the preceding months, the Wii had greatly outsold the PS3 in Japan, credited in part to the higher price tag on the Sony console.

In related news, Variety reports that Sony plans to launch an on-demand, HD video service for the PS3 in Japan early next year.

The service will initially offer car racing videos and a BBC car documentary, and eventually add films and other video from Sony and other companies -- with each download to cost about $1.85
