Tom Petty set to Play Super Bowl Halftime Show

Authored by Scott Goldberg on December 2, 2007 - 1:34pm.

Organizers of the 2008 Super Bowl in Glendale, AZ have announced that Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers will play the halftime show, Reuters reports. Prince put on a memorable performance in 2007, with 140 million people watching. According to Reuters, the Super Bowl is annually the year’s No. 1 U.S. television event.

Halftime specials have been more carefully selected in the years following Janet Jackson’s infamous “Boobgate,” which also prompted government action. Recent acts include the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, and U2.

Fox will televise this season’s Super Bowl.

Petty, according to Reuters, is active in speaking out against corporate sponsorships of concerts. His 2002 album The Last DJ was an attack on corporate greed. Yet this year’s halftime will be sponsored by Japanese tire company Bridgestone. Reuters said a Petty spokesperson did not respond to a request to comment.
