AOL Abandons Video Store; Amazon to Power Paid Downloads

Dulles, Va. - AOL (NYSE: TW) on Monday officially shuttered its online video store, and will instead offer users the opportunity to purchase or rent videos from online retail giant Amazon.com's (NASD: AMZN) Unbox video store.

AOL's own video efforts will now be focused on ad-supported, streaming videos, as the company as a whole has switched models to a largely advertising-driven business.

"With AOL's ad business model being an ad-driven business and the fact that the folks at AOL want to focus on streaming content, we made the switch to Amazon because they have thousands of assets and with them focusing on downloads we can focus on streaming videos," an AOL spokesperson told TVWeek.com.

Currently, some 20,000 Amazon videos are available through AOL Video Search.
